The Greggs Foundation has joined forces with food education charity Rethink Food to launch a free education programme that aims to teach up to 50,000 UK schoolchildren the importance of food security and sustainability.
The foundation – the independent grant-making charity linked to Tyneside firm food Greggs plc – said the partnership will play a vital part in the bakery giant’s Greggs Pledge, which aims to make the world a better place in a 10-point plan that include plans for healthier communities, supporting schoolchildren and growing the successful Greggs Breakfast Clubs programme. The charity Rethink Food is committed to revolutionising food education, having been created by teachers inspired to act by their own personal experiences of children regularly facing hunger as a barrier to learning.
To help address the problem, Rethink Food aims to give young people the knowledge and practical skills they need to live a ‘food secure’ life. The charity has pledged to deliver 10m hours of education in line with the goals for children and young people by 2030. As part of their new partnership agreement, The Greggs Foundation will contribute one million hours of education to the programme.
