Greene King 6p pints: The 23 Bristol pubs taking part in Jubilee deal

A total of 23 pubs in and around Bristol are giving away free pints as a celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Pub chain firm Greene King said a total of 408 pubs across the country would be selling its Greene King IPA beer for just 6p - the price of a pint in 1952 when the Queen began her reign.

However, the sixpence deal has since been replaced with a giveaway, after the promotion was outlawed because of restrictions under the Licensing Act. Anyone walking in to a Greene King pub - and there are 23 in the Bristol area - can get a pint of the ale for free by using code word ‘1952’ at the bar.

Queen's Platinum Jubilee: All the Bristol roads to close for street parties over Bank Holiday weekend

There is a catch - you can only claim one per person per pub and the offer is only for that one IPA while stocks last - but a pub crawl around some of the Greene King branches could be a pretty cheap day or night out today.

Greene King’s marketing director Andrew Gallagher said they wanted to do their bit to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

“The Platinum Jubilee is a fantastic way for the UK to come together and celebrate our Queen and country, so we wanted to take our customers back to where it all began – 1952, a time when Vera Lynn ruled the charts and pints were only 6p,” he said. “Some of our regulars may even remember watching the coronation back in 1952, although they may have been too young to enjoy a pint then.

“We can’t wait to see our customers enjoy this royally good deal on Monday 30th May, and look forwarding to celebrating the Platinum Jubilee in all our pubs across the bank holiday weekend,” he added.

A Greene King spokesperson later added: “Our pub and brewery teams are so excited to be celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a variety of events this week. One of the ideas we had was for a promotion in 400 of our managed pubs where customers could buy one pint each of Greene King IPA for 6p today – the same price it was in 1952.

"We thought this was a great way to celebrate this remarkable occasion and we’ve been thrilled at the response from customers. However, we have some good news for everyone, which is that we will now be giving the Jubilee first pint of Greene King IPA away free of charge today, as we now understand it’s not permissible under the licensing act to charge the 6p."
