Greek diner to launch new authentic dessert parlour in heart of Ayr

A smash hit food experience is to expand its offering in the heart of Ayr town centre.

Gyros, which brings a flavour of Greece to Newmarket Street, specialises in the famous meat wrap dish popular on the Med.

Now its owners are to branch out with a new project, named Pagotaria, offering authentic Greek desserts for hungry Ayr foodies.

Cakes, pastries, ice creams and milkshakes will all be on offer from the unit at 30 Newmarket Street - next door to Gyros.

Tony Kyrcikos, who hails from Larnaca in Cyprus, is the man behind the culinary empire which has proved a huge success since opening in town.

He told Ayrshire Live earlier this year: “I’ve been in the UK for 25 years and spent most of that time in London.

“Down there you will find quite a few restaurants specialising in this type of cuisine, but it’s not something you get up here as much.

"I firmly believe you should do one thing very well and that is what we are doing here. The food is cooked with passion and I hope the customers will see that."

News of the new venture has been greeted enthusiastically by customers on social media who are eager to try out Tony's popular range.

Lorna Thomas said: "Please have galaktoboureko on the menu."

And Newmarket Street neighbours Wild Dough posted: "We can’t wait! That's great news!"

The family business is headed by Tony and wife, Sophia, who prepares all the restaurant’s specials and ‘mezes’.
