Grand reopening of Wetherspoons delayed as pub chain issue statement

The grand re-opening of a Wetherspoons pub will be arriving later than expected after the pub chain confirmed delays.

The Master Mariner in New Brighton was due to reopen later this month on Tuesday, August 30, though this has now been indefinitely delayed, a statement from JD Wetherspoon has confirmed. The pub was closed in March after JD Wetherspoon was given the go ahead to redevelop the building by Wirral Council.

Their proposal was to redevelop the pub alongside the building next door, the site of the former Lacy's Bar, in an overhaul believed to cost £3m. However, the former Lacy's Bar building has now presented a hurdle for the re-opening of the Wetherspoons due to its "poor state."

JD Wetherspoon are now reviewing their options for a new opening date due to the state of the former Lacy's Bar. As a result, the pub chain have not been able to confirm when customers will be able to enjoy a pint at the seafront pub and suggested that such an announcement would come after their review of the former Lacy's bar.

Eddie Gershon, spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon, said: “The opening date [of late August] for The Master Mariner was given in good faith, however, this has now gone back. The building that Wetherspoon is developing alongside the existing pub was in a poor state and as a result the project needs to be reviewed.

“We are reviewing all options for taking the project forward, however, at present we can not confirm the opening date.”

The pub chain has owned the former Lacy's Bar since 2015, and before March had failed to do anything with the "eyesore" building despite two planning applications related to the site being greenlighted by Wirral Council in 2020 and 2021. In 2019 a large Mickey Mouse mural was painted on the building in what is believed to be a protest against the national pub chain.
