Grand National 2022: Merseyrail timetable changes and updates for Ormskirk, Southport and Kirkby lines

The Grand National is making its much anticipated return next month, with hoards of people planning their journey to Aintree.

Kicking off in 1839, the Grand National is held annually though, like many events, it was subject to cancellations and delays in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. This year, it's back with a bang.

The Randox Grand National 2022 will take place at Aintree Racecourse from April 7 until April 9. As racegoers from across the country join local fans travelling to the famous site, there will be timetable changes across Merseyrail's Northern lines from Thursday, April 7 until Saturday, April 9.

A number of changes will be implemented across the busy weekend, with trains departing earlier and more frequently than usual. The changes are as follows:

  • Ormskirk line
    • Trains will run between Liverpool city centre stations and Aintree every 10 minutes before and after the races.
    • Trains from Ormskirk to Liverpool will depart all stations up to two minutes earlier than usual.

  • Southport line - Trains from Southport to Liverpool will depart all stations up to two minutes earlier than usual.

  • Kirkby line - Between 11am - 2pm and 5pm - 9pm, all Kirkby line services will start and terminate at Sandhills station. Kirkby line passengers travelling towards Liverpool should alight at Sandhills and board any train to Liverpool. Passengers travelling towards Kirkby, should board any train to Southport or Ormskirk from Liverpool Central or Moorfields and change at Sandhills for trains to Kirkby.
  • Wirral lines - There are no changes to Wirral line services. If you are travelling from Wirral to the races, we recommend changing onto a train for Aintree at Moorfields station.
