A gran says she has lost out on £53,000 after her state pension age was raised with 'no warning whatsoever'. Ann Hughes, 65, was already suffering from numerous health issues when her state pension age was increased without notice - leaving her with no choice but continue working.
She started working at 15-years-old and eventually retired at the age of 63, when her deteriorating health led to her leaving her role as a care worker, the Mirror reports. Her health issues worsened when she was forced to remain in employment beyond the age she expected to retire, 60.
In the 1950s, over 3.5 million women were expected to leave the job market at 60, but were left in a lurch when Government plans to bring the State Pension age into line with men were introduced. Many were completely unaware until the last moment that they would have to keep working until the age of 65, now 66.
