Graham Potter receives Chelsea warning over 'down the line' issue amid Kepa resurgence

Graham Potter continued his fine start to life as Chelsea manager last night to ensure the Blues' spot in the Champions League knockout phases with a 2-1 victory over Red Bull Salzburg.

Kai Havertz's second half goal ended Salzburg's impressive run of 40 unbeaten home games in a much-improved performance from the one put on display against Manchester United over the weekend. Chelsea had 71% possession and registered 15 shots, nine more than they managed on Saturday.

Potter's start to life at the club has received plenty of plaudits from former players and pundits, but former Chelsea winger Joe Cole has warned the 47-year-old of a potential issue he may be faced to tackle within his squad.

Speaking to BT Sport after the win against the Austrian champions, Cole said: "It's the honeymoon period at the moment. Every player who's been out in the cold, they've seen Kepa come back in and now everyone in that squad - young players, old players - they feel like they've got the opportunity to get back into the fold and become a big player at Chelsea.

"So everyone is motivated. That wanes after time. And he [Potter] will know that. After two or three months, Hakim Ziyech for instance, he might be one - I'm only using him because he hasn't featured as much as the others.

"But his motivation might start to slip and then how do you manage that player then? All the pats on the back and everything might not be the right course of action.

"But I'm sure Graham Potter will address that when it comes. Everything is going so well at the moment you're almost looking at things down the line that could possibly go wrong and how we would react.

"But he's ticked every box so far. All the players are at it and the harden is rosy at the moment."

Ziyech has only managed 14 minutes under Potter after a failed move to AC Milan in the summer transfer window. The Moroccan has hardly had a sniff all season and seems likely to pursue a move elsewhere. Potter faces a similar problem with defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria, who is yet to make a single appearance for the club since his late loan move from Juventus.
