Graham Potter admits it’s ‘too early’ to know severity of Reece James’ injury after Chelsea star limps off

Graham Potter will assess Reece James over the next day or two to work out the extent of his knee injury sustained in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over AC Milan.

The 22-year-old excelled in the match at San Siro playing in Mason Mount to win a penalty after being judged to have been fouled by Fikayo Tomori - who was also sent off in the 18th minute.

However, a possible injury could sour a win for Potter and his side in Italy.

“Reece, we’re hoping he’ll be ok,” the Chelsea boss explained. “[We’ll need] 24-48 hours because it’s too early to tell you anything more than that.”

Adding that Mount was swapped for Conor Gallagher at half-time to rest him, Potter said: “He was on a yellow card and he’s played a lot of football so at half-time we gave him a breather.

“He was fantastic. He was a constant threat. I’ve been really pleased with him from the start. He’s a really important player.”

The Blues have risen from the bottom to the top of Group E in six days after Potter helped his side to back-to-back wins over Milan.

It has been a remarkable turnaround for Potter who remains undefeated as Blues manager after Jorginho and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s decisive goals against the Serie A champions.

“We had a bit of time away because of the international break but we just worked hard behind the scenes in emphasising the importance of the group, emphasising the importance of the team and how we act,” Potter added.

“You can see the boys have got quality. They are a responsible group, honest and open, and I’ve enjoyed working with them. It’s been a nice start for us and we need to carry on.

“I’ve been in football long enough to know that it’s hard to expect and predict football results. The important thing is the quicker you get to know the players the quicker you can build trust and understand them the better.

“But it is down to the guys, the players. They have really responded, been very honest and responsible and they want to do well. Our job is to try to help them and to try to help them enjoy their football. There is pressure and we want to win, but if they are enjoying their football there is quality in the team.”
