The Washington Commanders selected Mississippi State cornerback Emmanuel Forbes No. 16 overall, in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft.
What position would Washington address on Day Two?
When the Commanders were on the clock at No. 47 overall, several talented players at multiple positions of interest remained. Would Washington go with an offensive lineman, such as Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz?
Or would the Commanders add an edge rusher?
Washington surprised us all, selecting Illinois cornerback Jartavius Martin. Some Washington fans were upset, only because the team passed on an offensive lineman.
Finally, the Commanders were back on the clock toward the end of round three, selecting Arkansas center Ricky Stromberg at No. 97 overall.
We break down the grades for both picks, handing out grades for Washington’s Day Two selections.
47. CB Jartavius "Quan" Martin, Illinois
When Alabama defensive back Brian Branch was on the board with just two selections until the Commanders picked at No. 47, we speculated about the possibility of adding a first-round talent such as Branch to the mix. That would give Washington defensive backs with its first two picks.
The Detroit Lions moved up to select Branch. Two picks later, the Commanders surprisingly selected Martin. While some may think the Commanders would’ve chosen Branch, I am not so sure. The Commanders loved Martin, as did many teams around the NFL. His versatility, athleticism, college production, physicality and continued improvement made him an exciting addition.
Martin is Washington’s starter in the slot almost immediately. He can also play some safety, play in the box, or line up outside. If you stop for a second and forget that the Commanders chose Forbes in the first round, you’ll like this pick even more. Martin can play.
Grade: A-
97. C Ricky Stromberg, Arkansas
Washington went back to the SEC for its third-round pick, taking the league’s top blocker in 2022. Stromberg is a multi-year starter, playing against the best competition in football. He has a nasty streak and can also play some guard, but his future is at center. The Commanders have worked hard to upgrade the center position after injuries to Chase Roullier each of the last two seasons.
Stromberg will compete to start at center in 2023, and as a third-round selection, that’s what you want to hear. Washington found good value here.
