Gousto launches Sunday Roast you can make without an oven in 30 minutes

Recipe box Gousto is launching an ovenless Sunday Roast following research that shows a quarter of people are less likely to prepare a Sunday roast with nearly a fifth no longer using their oven at all due to the rising cost of energy. Taking just 30 minutes to make, the Gousto recipe is cooked entirely on the hob.

Crispy potatoes are achieved in this recipe by boiling the potatoes, fluffing them up in a colander, and then pan frying. This comes as part of Gousto’s new ‘Oven-free’ collection which will see nearly half of Gousto’s weekly menu rely on alternative cooking methods such as the slow cooker, microwave, hob and toaster, helping home cooks make more energy-efficient choices for their mealtimes.

Kathryn Huxtable, VP Food Proposition at Gousto said: “We know lots of households are looking for more energy-efficient ways to enjoy their favourite foods without having to compromise on taste and quality. Thanks to our expert chefs, we hope to make this a little easier for people with recipes they know and love, like the classic Sunday Roast, but without needing to turn on the oven.

"And as with all Gousto meals, our precise ingredients mean there's no food waste when it comes to cooking, so no money goes in the bin.”

The sharp rise in the cost of living has also rocketed the need for food banks with a 29% increase compared to last year. In response, Gousto has been working with one of the UK’s busiest food banks (the Hammersmith & Fulham foodbank in the Trussell Trust network) and the local government on a groundbreaking pilot to turn emergency food parcels into healthy meal kits.

The meal kits are designed with specially tailored recipes, all of which include at least two of your five-a-day, whole grains and healthy fats like nuts, seeds, eggs and avocados. To save on energy, all recipes take less than 30 mins to cook and can be cooked without an oven.

Research will be conducted by the council and supported by Imperial College London Self-Care Research Unit (SCARU) assessing the mental health and wellbeing benefits of the upgraded food parcels and accessible home cooking, along with physical and social impacts. The ambition is that the learnings will help inform the approach of emergency food providers across the country.

Gousto’s Oven-free range will be available to order from October 11 at www.gousto.co.uk, with first delivery on October 29.

Recipes in the range include:
