GOP Senator Urges Republicans To Move On From Embattled Candidate

Senator Thom Tillis, co-chair of the Senate NATO Observer Group speaks, during a press conference, in Budapest, Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024. Two U.S. senators will submit a bipartisan resolution to Congress

Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina has made a statement regarding the embattled gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson. Tillis emphasized the importance of credible evidence in light of recent reports linking Robinson to lewd and offensive comments on a porn forum. He expressed his belief that if Robinson fails to provide a convincing defense, it may be time for Republicans to 'move on' from supporting him.

Tillis, who had previously backed a different candidate in the primary, also cast doubt on Robinson's ability to win the race against Democrat Josh Stein. He urged a prompt resolution, suggesting that a decision should be made by the end of the week to allow focus on other crucial state-level races and the upcoming presidential election.

Highlighting the proximity of the election, Tillis stressed the need to prioritize various political contests in North Carolina. He underscored the significance of supporting President Trump's campaign in the state, as well as legislative races and the Council of State.

Although the deadline for Robinson to withdraw from the race has passed, Tillis indicated that without a compelling defense, it may be necessary for Republicans to withdraw their endorsements. He pointed out the importance of protecting other candidates who had previously endorsed Robinson, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability.

Tillis acknowledged the evolving nature of the situation, noting that new information had come to light in recent weeks. He emphasized the need for individuals who had endorsed Robinson before the allegations surfaced to reassess their support in light of the current circumstances.
