Republican Representative Victoria Spartz from Indiana was charged on Friday with a weapons violation at Washington Dulles International Airport. The Metropolitan Airports Authority spokesperson confirmed that Spartz violated a section of Virginia law that prohibits carrying any gun, explosive, or stun weapon into an air carrier airport terminal.
Spartz, who is the first Ukrainian-born member of Congress, received a summons to appear in a Virginia court. The violation is considered a Class 1 misdemeanor, with further details not immediately available.
source has reached out to Spartz's office for comment on the matter. Spartz, who was elected to the House of Representatives in 2020, has been known for her strong stance on US response to Russia's invasion. However, earlier this year, she opposed a foreign aid package that included $61 billion for Ukraine.
In May, Spartz won a hard-fought Republican primary for her 5th District seat based in the northeastern Indianapolis suburbs.
