Google set to cut 240 jobs in Ireland in another blow for tech sector

Google is expected to make 240 employees redundant from its workforce in Ireland.

The tech giant employs 5,500 people in Ireland, where its headquarters for Europe, the Middle East and Africa are located.

The Government has been made aware that a collective consultation process is to begin on Thursday. It's understood staff were informed of the job losses by email on Wednesday.

Google’s parent company Alphabet last month announced plans to cut 12,000 jobs globally, around 6% of its workforce, in the latest blow to the technology sector.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said at the time: "I take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here.”

He said the layoffs were was a moment to "sharpen our focus, reengineer our cost base and direct our talent and capital to our highest priorities."

Google's Dublin office is based on Barrow Street, Grand Canal Dock, Dublin 4.
