Google maps set for major navigation redesign with more AI features

  • Google Maps is undergoing a significant redesign, integrating its Gemini artificial intelligence technology to enhance user experience for its two billion global users.
  • A new feature, "Ask Maps," will provide personalised suggestions, such as nearby charging stations or multi-stop road trip itineraries, drawing from a database of over 300 million places and reviews.
  • "Ask Maps" will initially be available on mobile apps for iPhone and Android users in the US and India, with plans for wider rollout to PCs and other countries.
  • Another major update, "Immersive Navigation," offers a three-dimensional perspective of driving directions, including landmarks and terrain, to help users better understand their surroundings.
  • Immersive Navigation, which also helps explain route pros and cons and suggests parking, will first launch in the US on mobile apps and in cars with CarPlay and Android Auto, reflecting Google's broader push to integrate Gemini AI across its products.
