Golden Globes comedian Jo Koy cracks 'savage' joke about Harry and Meghan during ceremony

Host of the 2024 Golden Globes award show Jo Koy hurled 'savage' jokes at Harry and Meghan during this year's ceremony.Whilst the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not attend the award show, they found themselves the subject of a few brazen remarks that have caused a social media frenzy.

It comes after the comparatively unknown Filipino-American host and comedian Koy, who was appointed the role only two weeks ago, made comments in similar fashion about some of last year's most loved films ranging from Oppenheimer's long running time to nudity in Saltburn. Jokes were even made about singer Taylor Swift's relationship with Travis Kelce.

Koy, 52, headlined the event through its entirety, also making comments about TV series Succession before all attention turned to the royal family.

The American host said: "Succession has nine nominations. Just a great series about a rich, white, dysfunctional family, all scheming -- oh, wait, that's The Crown. I'm sorry. How great was Imelda Staunton in The Crown, wasn’t she amazing? Her portrayal of the Queen was so good Prince Harry called her and asked her for money."

Acknowledging the jibe, he added: "Like I said, I didn’t write all of these! That one wasn’t mine!"

He then continued: "Harry and Meghan Markle got paid millions for doing absolutely nothing. And that's just by Netflix."

Koy was addressing the couple's documentary on the streaming platform. The six-part documentary Harry & Meghan was released at the end of 2022 and saw them discuss royal life and their decision to take a step back from royal duties.

One user on X, formerly Twitter, wrote of the jokes: "Meghan Markle and Prince Harry [were] humiliated by Golden Globes host with savage joke." Some have also said that his jokes did "garner some laughs from the audience" whilst others argued "Not even close. There was relative silence."
