KOLKATA: There’s no stopping Shyama Mondol while it was a golden day for East Bengal’s Karna Bag as four meet records were set on Day III of the State Athletic Championship on Saturday.
A day after setting a meet record in women’s U-20 200m run, Shyama once again etched her name on the record books by winning the 400m run in the same age category. This time the Jalpaiguri girl erased Debashri Majumder’s record of 55.4 seconds set in 2009, by finishing in 55s ahead of East Bengal’s Moumi Jana (59.9s) and Mohun Bagan’s Shreya Das (1:00.1s).
Bag, on the other hand, shone bright by claiming three tiles along with setting a meet record. Bag won the men’s U-20 400m hurdles event in 53.2s, bettering the 55.3s record mark set by Purba Midnapur’s Biswajit Samanta in 2014. He then finished first in the U-20 men’s 400m run also with a timing of 48.4s. The youngster was also a member of the gold-medal winning 4x400m mixed relay team.
Another meet record was set in the men’s 400m run when Karunamoy Mahato of Mohun Bagan bettered his club mate Golam Kibria’s timing of 48.1s set in 1987 by winning the event in 47.5s.
Siliguri’s Mohammed Asraf Ali set the final meet record of the day by clearing 2.06m to win the gold in men’s U-20 high jump event. The previous record was held by Abhishek Roy of North 24 Parganas who leaped 2.05m in 2007.
Mohun Bagan prevailed in 4x100m relay events winning the men’s and men’s U-20 competitions. The men’s 1500m was won by Police Athletic Club’s Manas Das who ended in 3:59s, while the Pioneer Sporting Association’s Mukti Bayen won the women’s event.
