A man is in a critical condition and undergoing surgery after being shot by police on the Gold Coast on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities were called to a welfare check at a home at Bellagio Crescent, Coomera, around 3:20pm, where they were confronted by a 29-year-old man allegedly brandishing a knife.

Shots were fired about 40 minutes later, critically injuring the man who was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Superintendent Brendan Smith said the man had been asked by police "on several occasions to put the knife down, he failed to comply with that and rushed the police".

"He's confronted police with a knife, and they've had to take action," he said.

"The police themselves were in extreme danger and they've acted within their training."

Superintendent Smith said police attended the Bellagio Crescent address in relation to a "potential mental health concern".

"We got information throughout the course of the day that he was threatening to self-harm with potential threats to other people, so we've been to a number of locations today in an attempt to locate him and ended up at this location," he said.

Superintendent  Smith said the confrontation happened on the footpath.

"The matter will be further investigated by the Ethical Standards Command and overviewed by the crime and misconduct commission," he said.

Superintendent Smith said it was too early to say how many shots were fired.

A crime scene has been established.

Police Union President Ian Leavers said three officers from Coomera police station attended the incident, with more than one using their firearm.

He said officers on the scene called for a negotiator and tried to negotiate with the man themselves.

"I am advised that everything was recorded on a body-worn video, which will certainly be used with the investigation and certainly protect the police, I have complete confidence in the actions of the officers involved," he said.

Second shooting in Brisbane's south

South-east Queensland police officers were involved in a second shooting on Sunday.

Police said they received calls about an armed man at a Liquidambar Place address in Stretton around 7pm where they found a 43-year-old man with a knife.

He allegedly advanced at the officers, who then shot him.

He was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
