Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate announced on Thursday that the city is willing to step in and host the 2026 Commonwealth Games after Victoria withdrew from hosting the event due to projected cost overruns.
Victoria Premier Dan Andrews expressed concerns that the cost of the Games, which were initially planned to be held in four regional hubs, could escalate to over 7 billion Australian dollars from the originally budgeted 2.6 billion Australian dollars.
