Glenvale preparing for promotion shot as boss John Kelly highlights youth focus

Glenvale boss John Kelly insists his team will be well placed to battle for promotion next season - whichever division they end up playing in.

The Paisley side enjoyed mixed results in their first season in the West of Scotland Football League, eventually finishing fifth in Division 4.

Now that the league body have moved from temporary conferences to divisions, Glenvale are waiting for news about exactly what the set up of their new league will be.

Kelly is adamant his side will be raring to go as they make a swift return to pre-season training this week.

Kelly told Express Sport: “We knew how tough our first season was going to be with how late we were accepted to join the league.

“We did well to get a team together and we managed some great results, including beating the two best teams in the division.

“The winner for us has been the progress off the park.

“We’ve always been planning for this season coming and now we’re really well placed to have a proper challenge at the top end of the table.

“We were told last year we’d be moving into Division 3, but now there are other teams looking to join.

“They’re going to cap the total number of teams, so we’re now waiting to see what the set up will be.

“There will be a vote at the AGM.

“There might be a 3A and a 3B and the top eight teams from both eventually go into Division 3, or it might stay as Division 4 and have promotion and relegation between 3 and 4.

“Our preference would be to have a 3A and 3B.

“It’s not helpful not knowing what division we’re going to be in, but we’re coming back on June 1 so we’ll be ready to hit the ground running whatever happens.”

The Paisley club recently held their first player of the year awards ceremony, with Ross Stevenson picking up top goalscorer and players’ player of the year while Gav Naismith picked up the player of the year gong.

Glenvales Under-20’s development squad were also involved on the night, handing out their prizes to Ben McDowall (player of the year) and Brodie Gillanders (top goalscorer and players’ player of the year).

Kelly was delighted to see the two clubs coming together, with their youth policy still a key factor as they look to progress next season.

Kelly said: “It was a brilliant night, especially having it joint with the Under-20’s.

“We’ve already had three or four of them up with the senior team and it was great to see both teams mingling on the night.

“The kids are definitely part of the bigger picture here and we want to keep building for the future.

“We’re speaking to other players and hopefully we’ll have three or four additions.

“We’re still building and we want to make sure we bring the right guys in.

“But our best young players have picked up some vital experience and they will continue to play a big part for the club.”
