Glastonbury weather: Heavy showers forecast as festivalgoers arrive

Glastonbury 2023 is finally here.

This year’s festival will see iconic headline performances from legends like Guns N’ Roses, Elton John, and Manic Street Preachers, alongside the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Lana Del Rey, Lizzo, and more. Last month, the organisers released the full line-up and stage times.

The Met Office has said thunderstorms in Devon and Cornwall and eastern areas of England could cause “potential transport disruption” ahead of festival gates opening on Wednesday.

Here is the full forecast:

What is the weather forecast for Glastonbury 2023?

Devon and Cornwall saw wet weather on Tuesday, with showers sticking around until the early evening.

On Wednesday, showers are expected to remain across parts of the UK as festivalgoers arrive, the Met Office said.

Despite showers, temperatures are expected to remain warm at 22C on Wednesday and Thursday.

A spokesperson for the Met Office, Greg Dewhurst, said: “On Wednesday, it is going to be generally fine across the whole of the UK, another day of sunny spells and some scattered showers. Showers could be heavy and thundery at times, particularly across the north and west of the UK.

“At the moment, we don’t have any warnings for thunderstorms but there could be potentially some more that get issued and perhaps at short notice.

“It is a repeat performance on Thursday, with some sunshine and showers, perhaps with more of a focus on parts of England and Wales. Temperatures are still on the warm side, perhaps a degree higher, so 29°C in the south-east.

“It is a similar picture in the south-west to the south-east, with a risk of some showers over the next couple of days. The showers should become less frequent for England and Wales on Friday but it does turn wetter and breezier for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

“Temperatures again are around 30°C at the maximum in the south-east.”

The festival itself is likely to avoid the worst of the weather.

This should mean festivalgoers avoid the infamous Glastonbury mud.

Towards the weekend, the rain is expected to clear, making way for dryer and brighter conditions with highs of 26C expected on Sunday for Sir Elton John’s headline performance.

Another Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said: “Where thunderstorms do pop up, these have the potential to be impactful. There could potentially be disruption to rail services with lightning strikes.

“What’s causing the thunderstorms is a warm humid plume of air moving up from the South north-eastwards.”
