Glasgow venue ordered to close after mouse infestation uncovered during inspection

A popular venue in Glasgow's west end has been forced to close after a mouse infestation was uncovered by environmental health officers.

Staff working in Cottiers on Hyndland Road were told that their shifts would not be going ahead over the weekend after the unplanned visit led to the venue being told to close.

The infestation was uncovered by the officers who then ordered the company to sort the issue out in the interests of public safety.

Cottiers, a former church, is a popular fixture in the west end and features a public bar, beer garden, dining room, and large function room often used for weddings.

In a message seen by Glasgow Live, bosses allegedly outlined to staff that the bar and attic areas would have to remain closed until "Monday or Tuesday".

Another message appears to instruct staff that the "official party line" is that the business was "shut for refurbishment".

In a post on social media, Cottiers said: "After a busy festive period we are taking the time to do some refurbishment. The main bar and Attic will therefore be closed until Monday the 16th.

"Sorry for any inconvenience. We hope you all have a lovely weekend and we can’t wait to welcome you back."

Staff who were due to work over the weekend have been left out of pocket and contacted the workers' rights group Better Than Zero.

A spokesperson for Better Than Zero said: "When a business is forced to close because of neglectful management, workers should not have to lose pay.

"This is a constant risk for countless workers across Scotland - last minute shift cancellations and loss of income.

"For workers who are already on the breadline during a cost-of-living crisis, this can be catastrophic.

"We urge Cottiers to ensure that all workers are fully paid for all scheduled shifts, and we urge anyone affected by this to get in touch with us."

We reported back in August how residents living close Cottiers were left unable to sleep at night due to the noise and anti-social behaviour coming from the venue.

They also raised concerns about infestations due to bins being left overflowing behind the venue and rubbish being 'strewn all over the place'.

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: "Cottiers was closed by Environmental Health because of a mouse infestation officers uncovered. Company has been instructed to address this problem in the interests of public health."

Cottiers has been approached for comment.
