Glasgow's top rated hotel and why guests say it's 'best in UK'

With covid lockdowns now a thing of the past, our city is very much open to visitors once more and Glasgow remains a hugely attractive destination.

Whether it be Scots from elsewhere in the country stopping through to enjoy a big gig at the Hydro, those looking to sample the city's famous nightlife or tourists from overseas using Glasgow as a stop off point for the Highlands and Islands, there are thousands of arrivals at Glasgow Airport and our train and bus stations everyday.

Of course, many people travelling to the city won't just be stopping for a fleeting visit - there are plenty of reasons to extend the stay - and that means good overnight accommodation is essential.

Thanks to the buzz brought about by recent major events in the city, such as the Commonwealth Games and COP26, as well as Glasgow's reputation as a major music destination, a number of new hotels have popped up in recent years.

One to make a big impact, finding itself as the top rated Glasgow hotel on TripAdvisor, is the Dakota.

Of the 2,140 reviews registered on the travel site, over 1,820 have deemed the accommodation as 'excellent', aiding to its full five star ranking.

Opening on West Regent Street back in 2016, the luxury hotel features 83 bedrooms, including 11 elegant suites.

The Glasgow hotel also boasts the Dakota Bar & Grill, serving "interesting, fresh, sophisticated comfort food".

And such is the popularity of the hotel, some people have hailed it as the "best in the UK".

One guest said following their stay: "What a great hotel! It was honestly the best hotel we have been to in the UK.

"It's very well decorated and really luxurious, the staff are very nice.

"We shall definitely be back."

Another echoed those comments and said: "Beautiful hotel, everything was wonderful, it smelled lovely, staff were so professional and friendly. Very polite and courteous. Everywhere was spotlessly clean.

"All in all a great weekend that i would highly recommend to anyone."

One person said: "Staff were friendly and attentive. Check in was swift. Room was spacious and comfortable. Rainfall shower was perfect. Bed was soft, room was pitch dark for sleep. Breakfast was delicious.

"Everything we could have asked for and more."

Yet it appears the food and drink offering is a major draw to the Dakota too, with several reviews praising the Dakota Bar and Grill and Jack's Bar.

One guest said: "We stayed for one night in a king size executive suite. We enjoyed the bar, the cigar court and the restaurant. Husband said it’s the best fillet steak in Glasgow."

Another comment reads: "We dined at the grill, had a steak which was cooked to perfection along with a great choose of drinks list including nice flavoured cocktails.

"We finished our second night at the bar Jacks. Yet again, perfect, fast service and great atmosphere."

It seems many head to the Dakota to enjoy a special occasion, with customers saying: "We were at Dakota tonight for some anniversary drinks at the bar and we had a lovely time.

"We loved the ambience, the drinks and the staff, especially Freya. She made us some delicious cocktails and went above and beyond and made sure we had a great time on our special night.

"We will definitely be back soon!"

And one review in particular gave the hotel a lot of love, while summing up the views left in the majority of the comments.

It read: "I've been staying at the Dakota for around four years on my visits home to Glasgow. It's just a wonderful hotel with outstanding Staff - they have got better over the years if that was possible.

"What I love about the Dakota is I feel completely relaxed and at home. Get me in the Library, Pint of Moretti in hand with my Bang & Olufsen's on - bliss. I've said it many times - the best breakfast anywhere.

"Give this business your business. I'll be back soon."

When we looked for prices, the lowest we could find for a night's stay at the city centre hotel was £123. How much would you pay to stay there?
