Glasgow ranks in top 10 healthiest cities in the UK

A new study has ranked the top 10 healthiest cities in the UK, with Glasgow taking one of the spots.

Comparethemarket researched cities across the country in terms of healthy lifestyles, quality of green spaces, gym memberships, healthy restaurants, and outdoor activities.

According to the study, Edinburgh comes out on top for supporting a healthy lifestyle. The city boasts 105 health-based restaurants and an overall score of 82.20 out of 100.

London took the second spot, ahead of Cambridge and Brighton & Hove. Tying with Sheffield in 10th place was Glasgow.

Our green spaces and parks came out at 82, one of the best scores on the ranking. As for gym memberships, we had an average of 11.9 per 1,000 of the population.

According to the survey, Glasgow has 50 health-based restaurants - over half the amount that Edinburgh has. Also included in the top 10 was Newcastle, Bristol, Norwich, Swansea, Liverpool, Oxford, Exeter, and Sheffield.

A spokesperson for Comparethemarket said: “Now the new year has arrived, many of us will be starting to think about the changes we want to make - big or small - to improve our health and wellbeing.

“By looking at factors including the quality of green spaces and parks, online searches for gym memberships, number of healthy restaurants and outdoor activities available, the life insurance team at Comparethemarket reveals the best cities in the UK for leading a healthy lifestyle.

"Glasgow’s green spaces and parks are considered to be of ‘very high’ quality, scoring 81.63 out of a possible 100. But there are only 50 healthy restaurants for Glaswegians to choose from, less than half as many as there are in Edinburgh (105), the only other Scottish city in making it into the top ten."
