NEW DELHI: A recent report by environment organisation Climate Trends says that reintroducing the early bird subsidy offered by Delhi government to the first 1,000 purchases under its electric vehicles policy will help bring down the upfront cost of new EV models to the Rs 5-15 lakh range, which is the segment representing over 75% of all the vehicle sales.
Urging the government to reintroduce that subsidy, the report said it would help to raise the share of EVs on Delhi’s roads. At present, there are just 4,298 privately owned electric four-wheelers in the city. EVs have 36-65% lower operation costs over the long period compared with the petrol variants of the same car models and, more importantly, are environmentally friendly.
