Girl, 15, dies after asthma attack at school as staff pay tribute to 'gentle soul'

A 15-year-old died after having an asthma attack during an open evening at a school.

Ceili McInerney was attending an open evening at her school, Coláiste an Átha in Kilmuckridge, last Thursday evening when she had the asthma attack.

The school was quickly evacuated and Community First Responders rushed to help the Transition Year student, before she was attended to by paramedics, with gardai and the fire service also arriving at the scene.

The teen was brought to Wexford General Hospital and later transferred to Crumlin Hospital in Dublin where she sadly died four days later on Monday, reports the Irish Mirror.

Her school issued a touching tribute to their former student online, who they called a "beautiful soul", and said Ceili would be remembered for her "fun and her sense of adventure".

Coláiste an Átha wrote on its Facebook page: "It is with heavy hearts that we must announce the passing of TY student Céilí McInerney this week. As a school we are devastated by the loss of such a beautiful soul.

Our spirits were buoyed today listening to the many wonderful stories about her kindness, her fierce loyalty, her sense of fun and her sense of adventure. She left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

"The entire Coláiste an Átha school community would like to offer our sincere condolences to Céilí’s family and friends at this sad time. She will be sadly missed by everyone that knew her.

"May her gentle soul rest in eternal peace."

Her teachers and those who knew her also paid tribute to her online with one writing: "Céilí my beautiful talented student. I will miss that amazing smile. Rest easy sweet girl x"

Another remembered the teenager for her kindness to everyone she met and her smile that could "light up a whole room".

A fellow student wrote: "Cèilí brought life into the corridors and mischief into the classroom, always standing her ground and that of her friends never letting them down. I never got a chance to get to know Céilí. Gone too soon, follow your dreams up there gorgeous."

Ceili's remains will be reposing at her home on Wednesday afternoon from 2pm to 7pm.
