In a recent podcast appearance on the DJVlad YouTube channel, Gilbert Arenas went viral for claiming he was a better player at 25 than Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry was at 25. Now, in a newly aired episode, Arenas has attempted to add clarity to his statement.
“I got hurt at 25,” Arenas said. “So I don’t really have a resume after that. My resume is ‘by 25 these players couldn’t f*** with me.’ As a career, I’m not even in these f****** categories. I can’t compete with the god. But before the god became a god, yeah.”
Following his admission, Arenas then began to shed light on why he continually looks to set an age cap when comparing his career with other elite guards.
“At 25 I was great. 26 on I was mediocre,” Arenas said. “That’s just reality. So even when it comes to a career, you know, with the Dames and all that. I can’t compete with their careers. My stats, it’s not even close, right? That’s just the reality of it, right. So when you say who’s better, I always say you have to have a time frame. You want me to be honest, then it’s them. You wanna have something to talk about? Then let’s put a cap on it by a certain age, then it would be me.”
Arenas struggled with injury throughout his career, so it makes sense that he would want to compare himself against players before his career began to curtail. Nevertheless, Arenas has admitted he did not have a better career than Curry, which will likely appease the countless fans he offended with his original statement.
