Giants sign Tony Jefferson to 53-man roster, elevate two

The New York Giants have signed defensive back Tony Jefferson to their active roster from the practice squad. It brings the team’s roster back up to 53 men after cornerback Aaron Robinson was placed on injured reserve earlier this week.

Jefferson had been elevated in each of the team’s first two games this season, recording one tackle.

The Giants also elevated two practice squad players — quarterback Davis Webb and wide receiver Marcus Johnson — ahead of their Week 5 game against the Green Bay Packers.

With Tyrod Taylor (concussion) out, Webb will serve as the backup to Daniel Jones.

“He’s been in the offense for a long time,” head coach Brian Daboll said of Webb this week. “So, each week, even though he’s on the practice squad, he prepares. That’s what we ask all our guys to do, whether it’s a practice squad running back, prepare like you’re going to have an opportunity to play, so when the opportunity does present itself and you’re brought up that you’re ready to go. So that’s whether we sign a guy this week and start getting him ready to play or a guy like Davis, but certainly he’s been with me for a while. So, you’re not teaching it. He knows our stuff.”

Johnson was also elevated to the Giants’ active roster last week, but saw just one snap in a victory over Chicago.
