Giants cut two quarterbacks with Tyrod Taylor designated to return from IR

The New York Giants designated quarterback Tyrod Taylor to return from injured reserve (IR) on Monday, officially opening his 21-day practice window.

With expectations that Taylor will be active on Monday night against the Green Bay Packers (not necessarily starting), the Giants waived quarterback Matt Barkley, who had been serving as the backup to rookie Tommy DeVito.

The 33-year-old Barkley was a fourth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2013 NFL draft. He quickly became a journeyman, making stops with nine different teams over his 11-year career, including two stints with the aforementioned Bills.

Barkley was initially signed to the Giants’ practice squad before landing on the active roster after Daniel Jones suffered a torn ACL and was placed on season-ending IR.

The Giants also terminated quarterback Jacob Eason, who had been signed in early November, from their practice squad.

The Giants are likely to sign Barkley back to their practice squad, filling the void left by Eason, assuming he clears waivers.
