George Grierson opens up on Irvine Meadow exit as he endorses interim successor

George Grierson has shed further light on his shock resignation as Irvine Meadow manager - and backed interim successor Kevin Deeney to be a hit.

Grierson stepped down on Friday after just five months in the hot seat, citing personal reasons.

Meadow chairman Robert Jeffrey said the news came as a 'great surprise to everyone at the club' and 24 hours later Deeney, Grierson's long-term assistant, was handed the reins until the end of the season.

Deeney told Ayrshire Football News he was taking the job with Grierson's blessing and suggested the former gaffer 'needs to go and rest."

Now Grierson has opened up more on his decision to move on and revealed his delight that Deeney is taking on the Medda mantle.

He said: “It’s well documented I had two hip operations over a four week-period earlier in the season. It’s a lot to put the body through.

“Kev doesn't need my blessing but he has my full endorsement. I can’t think of anybody better to take on the job.

"He's been my assistant for more than a decade but people might not realise just how close we are away from football too.

"I’ll always be on the end of the phone for him.”
