Gen Z asks one-day WFH, HR denies citing policy; what he did when company’s biggest client called at 10 PM left HR stunned

A Gen Z employee’s request to work from home for just one day reportedly turned into a tense exchange with HR after he was later questioned for ignoring an urgent client call at 10 pm, as per a viral X post narrating a corporate employee's experience. The employee had been told that company policy required staff to work from the office, but when HR expected him to remain available after hours, he asked why flexibility applied when the company needed it but not when he did.

According to the account, the employee had asked HR if he could work remotely for one day because he had a personal appointment in the afternoon. HR rejected the request, citing company policy and saying employees were expected to work from the office.

The employee accepted the decision and reported to the office at 8:30 am the following morning. He worked his full shift before leaving at 5 pm.

Employee questioned over 10 pm client call

Three days later, HR reportedly called the employee into a meeting to discuss an incident from Tuesday night.

HR told him that one of the company’s biggest clients had called him at around 10 pm and that a text message had also been sent afterward. The employee acknowledged seeing both the missed call and message the next morning but said he had not responded because it was already 10 pm.
