GE just released its smartest fridge yet, with a built-in barcode scanner for seamless grocery shopping

GE Profile™ 27.9 Cu. Ft. Smart 4-Door French-Door Refrigerator with Kitchen Assistant.

It's CES 2026, and GE just released a refrigerator which will bring a fresh energy to kitchens across the country this New Year.

Flooded with smart technology, the GE Profile 27.9 Cu. Ft. Smart 4-Door French-Door Refrigerator with Kitchen Assistant features an 8" intuitive LCD touch screen for full control.

The true showstopper feature? Its built-in bar code scanner which creates a digital list of the contents of your fridge as you add them, meaning you won't ever double purchase again. Arguably, its second-best feature is the built-in KitchenAssistant, which can create recipes and meal plans from the contents of your fridge. Talk about life-changing.

Yes, you can expect the usual bells and whistles that come with most of the best smart fridges, from a built-in camera allowing you to view the contents of your fridge from the grocery store, to adjustable temperature drawers.

Fighting decision fatigue

Ever found yourself standing in the grocery store trying to rack your brain to remember whether you bought 3 onions or 6 onions during your last trip? Well, there's a last time for everything as 2026 sees AI enter our kitchens, and specifically, our refrigerators.

Among the stand-out technologies inside the GE smart fridge is a barcode scanner. Use this to scan the ingredients that you add to your fridge, and it will curate a digital list of the contents of your fridge, which you can view in the SmartHQ app. This way, you've always got an inventory to hand, whether you're in aisle 15 of Target or cozy on your sofa doing your grocery shop from your phone. Not only will this help you avoid purchasing duplicates, but this handy feature means you'll reduce food waste — remembering ingredients that are nestled right in the back of your fridge means you'll be more likely to base that night's meal around these foods, to avoid throwing them in the trash.

Next up on the list of wow-worthy features is the Kitchen Assistant. This AI-powered helper can do all of the things that are usually on your to-dread list. It can manage your shopping list and alert you when food is going out of date soon. Better yet? It offers meal planning based on the ingredients in your fridge, and when they should be cooked to enjoy them at their best. You can even use it to add to your grocery list, so that you won't forget a thing.

Last but definitely not least, the camera is one of the defining features of this fridge. Yes, there are a handful of smart fridges which have cameras inside, but this one lets you view your fridge drawer, usually filled with fresh fruits and veggies, so that you can see which ones are past their due-by date while in the grocery store. Because sometimes, a list doesn't cut it.

What else is new?

An 8" touchscreen is one of the standout design features of this smart fridge. Customise its color to suit your kitchen and use it to display things like the weather, so that you can easily check this while doing chores.

What's a smart fridge without a water dispenser? Not just a water dispenser, but a smart one, obviously — with sensors to release the exact amount of filtered water you need, so that you needn't watch as it fills up your Stanley cup. Even if you're filling a jug of water for the table, it knows the perfect amount, every time.

Availability

This smart fridge will be available to purchase from March 2026 for an MSRP of $4,899.
