Gas leak threat: School evacuated in West Delhi's Naraina, fire tenders rushed

NEW DELHI: A school in the Naraina area of West Delhi was evacuated on Monday following reports of a foul smell believed to be emanating from a gas storage facility, said police.

Upon receiving the reports, teams from the NDRF, Delhi Police, and Delhi Fire Service swiftly responded to the scene and initiated the evacuation procedure.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (west), Vichitra Veer, stated, "PCR calls were received regarding a foul smell in the area of C-block, Naraina. After getting calls, the concerned agencies have responded to the situation and taken required precautionary measures. We are examining the matter, and appropriate legal action will be initiated based on the facts."

According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), they received a call at 12:18 pm from an individual reporting a potential gas or chemical leak from drums stored in a godown.

The DFS promptly dispatched a fire tender, followed by three additional fire tenders upon further demand. Preliminary indications suggest that some form of chemical fumes or gas with a pungent odor is seeping from containers within the godown premises.

The specific gas or fumes have not yet been identified. As a safety measure, the area was cordoned off by teams from the police, NDRF, and DDMA (Delhi Disaster Management Authority). Water sprinkling was employed to contain the potential spread of the gas leak.
