Gary Neville namechecks Newcastle owners in latest Man Utd rant against the Glazer family

Gary Neville has raised the investment from Newcastle United's owners in his latest Manchester United rant following the humbling four-goal defeat to Brentford. Erik ten Hag's side sit bottom of the Premier League table after two games, having been annihilated by the Bees in a devastating first-half spell.

Manchester United have suffered a frustrating transfer window so far, with their public pursuit of Frenkie de Jong quickly turning into a farcical saga. The Red Devils have invested heavily on the playing side in the decade since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, but the team remains some way off challenging for a Premier League title once again.

Neville and former team-mate Roy Keane dissected the problems at the club on Sky Sports after the opening-day home defeat to Brighton. Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez have been brought in so far, but the pundits agreed ten Hag's side remain desperately short in a number of areas on the pitch.

Rather than focus on the team's failings following the defeat in the capital, Neville instead turned his attention to the failings of the club's owners. The pundit argued Manchester United's spending in the transfer market in recent seasons masked the failings off the pitch which have created a 'toxic culture' since his former manager's exit in 2013.

However, Neville argues this money comes from the Red Devils' global brand and the work of their commercial department rather than from their owners. The ex-England international says this contrasts to the investment now seen at Newcastle, along with Sheikh Mansour at Manchester City and during Roman Abramovich's time at Chelsea.

He told Sky Sports: "When they say they've given them the money, the only money that has been spent on players at Manchester United is the money the club has generated or that it's borrowed. It has not come from the family, so let's get this out of our heads that the Glazer family are putting money in every year like Roman Abramovich did, like the Saudi Arabians are doing at Newcastle, like Shekih Mansour has done at Manchester City.

"The hand in the pocket spending on players, they've [the Glazers] not done that. They've borrowed, and they've used the revenue that the club generates through its incredible fanbase and a great commercial operation. That's what happened.

"Anybody who owned that club - if us four owned the club tomorrow - we could spend the same money every year through it's generation of revenues. That's a fact. These owners since Sir Alex Ferguson in 10 years have proven they can not manage a forward-thinking football club. It has been overtaken in every single department and it's painful."
