Gareth Southgate told why West Ham's Jarrod Bowen needs an England chance over Marcus Rashford

Former Tottenham icon Teddy Sheringham believes West Ham's Jarrod Bowen has been on 'fire' this season for West Ham and deserves an England call up over Marcus Rashford.

Bowen, 25, alongside Declan Rice, has been the main star this season for David Moyes' side with his 18 goal contributions in all competitions for the Hammers.

West Ham fans, as well as the player himself, may wonder why Bowen hasn't been given his England chance yet but with upcoming fixtures on the horizon for Gareth Southgate's side against Switzerland and Ivory Coast, there could finally be an opening for the Hammers' star.

An opportunity that could have been snatched away from him if his injury sustained against Liverpool in the most recent Premier League encounter was to be as bad as first initially feared.

"They seem to think that the tackle from [Andy] Robertson, around his heel area," Moyes clarified in the immediate aftermath of the Liverpool defeat.

“Not sure where but we will get him scanned. Jarrod has been exceptional for us so the last thing we want is for him to be injured.

“It could be nothing, but in the same breath I didn’t like the way he wasn’t able to put his weight through his foot so that worries me.”

Thankfully, one day later and West Ham had confirmed on their official website that the forward suffered “no significant damage” after a scan.

Head of West Ham’s Medical department, Richard Collinge, said: “Jarrod underwent an MRI scan in London on Sunday morning and thankfully no significant injury has occurred.

“He will continue to be monitored by the medical team and will undergo further examination in the coming days.”

A touch of fortune that Bowen will be grateful for as he looks to earn an England call-up. First there is an immediate return to action for the East Londoner in Spain this upcoming Thursday as he looks to continue where left off prior to the Anfield defeat.

In terms of International credentials, the Englishmen's main competition for a spot in Southgate's roster is Man United's Marcus Rashford who, unlike Bowen, has been in poor form for a while now and consequently, has his Red Devils future in doubt with PSG lurking as per the Manchester Evening News.

The 24-year-old was also left out of the first XI for the most recent 4-1 defeat at the hands of neighbours Man City.

With all taken into consideration, former Spurs talisman Teddy Sheringham has offered his advice to Southgate regarding squad selections for the upcoming March internationals- words that will not come as a surprise to the Hammers faithful who have been loud in their displeasure at not seeing their winger being given the same chances as others.

“Rashford is having a tough time at the moment, he can’t get in the Manchester United team and Jarrod Bowen has been on fire, scoring goals and making goals. There’s a case for him being picked in the England squad with Rashford coming out if you’re doing it on recent form. There is a chance that will happen," Sheringham told Lord Ping.

“With Maguire, it’s a completely different thing. He’s getting all sorts of stick from the ex-Man United players, but he’s still a talented player. He’s still England’s best centre-back over the last four or five years and he doesn’t deserve to be dropped by Gareth Southgate.

"He performed very, very well [at the Euros] last summer. That’s what Gareth Southgate will be looking at.”
