Gareth Southgate’s Tino Livramento admission shows he has long been eyed as Trippier’s successor

Tino Livramento is not only seen as a long-term successor for Kieran Trippier at Newcastle United, with past Gareth Southgate quotes showing it's something the Three Lions have thought about too.

Trippier has been the regular right-back for both Newcastle and England in recent years, and that isn't expected to change anytime soon. But Newcastle want competition for places and are in talks with Southampton to sign England under-21s star Livramento this summer, following their relegation from the Premier League.

In the short-term Livramento would provide competition for Trippier in Eddie Howe's side, with Newcastle now battling on multiple fronts thanks to their Champions League qualification for the upcoming season. But in the longer term, the Saints full-back would be seen as Trippier's successor as first-choice right-back, while the Magpies also have hot prospect Harrison Ashby, who is expected to go out on loan this season.

And it would appear that the Trippier succession plan isn't only in mind at St James' Park either. Previous quotes from Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate suggest that he has long since had his eye on the ex-Chelsea defender as a future England star.

Assessing his options on the right side of defence a year ago, Southgate said: "Reece (James) and Trent (Alexander-Arnold) are performing at a really high level. I also think Tino Livramento, when talking about young players, has had an excellent start to the season.”

Looking to capitalise on Southampton's relegation from the Premier League, Newcastle will now hope they can help Livramento in the next stage of his development, and hopefully on his journey to becoming the England regular he is touted to become.
