Gardai make further arrests after 'multiple stabbings' at hotel in Kerry used for direct provision

Gardai have arrested two men in their 20s and 30s this morning in relation to a public order incident in a Killarney hotel that left several people needing medical treatment.

Four people were injured at a hotel in Co Kerry on Sunday, during what Gardaí described as a ‘public order incident involving a group of males’.

Emergency services were called to the scene at a hotel in Killarney, which is currently being used for direct provision, shortly after 8.30 pm.

Four men were taken to the hospital with reported stab injuries, which are described as non-life threatening.

Today’s arrests mean a total of eight people have been detained as part of an ongoing investigation.

In an update published this morning, a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí investigating a public order incident which occurred at a hotel in Killarney, Co. Kerry on Sunday, 1st January 2023, have made two further arrests as part of their investigation.

“Two men aged in their 20s and 30s were arrested this morning, Tuesday 3rd January 2023, in the Killarney area.

“Both are currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Killarney Garda Station.

“This brings to a total of eight (8) persons arrested and detained as part of this ongoing investigation.”

Gardai previously told the Irish Mirror: “Shortly after 8:30 pm, on Sunday the 1st of January 2023, Gardai and Emergency Services were alerted following reports of a public order incident involving a group of males at a Hotel in Killarney, County Kerry.

“Four males injured in the course of the incident were removed from the scene to hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not described as life-threatening.

“Two males aged in their 30s have since been arrested and brought to Killarney Garda Station where they are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Both men remain in Garda custody, at this time.

“A Garda forensic examination has taken place of the scene. The investigation is ongoing.”
