Gardai investigate as cyclist seriously injured after being hit by car in Co Galway

A cyclist is in a serious condition in hospital after being hit by a car in Co Galway.

The incident happened in the Powers Cross area near Ballyshrule, Portumna on Monday morning.

A man in his 50s was struck by the vehicle at around 6.15am.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene and the man was brought to University Hospital Galway.

Officers said he is currently in a serious condition.

The road was closed for an analysis by Forensic Collision Investigators but it has since reopened.

And gardai are now asking for members of the public who may have information about the incident, or who were in the area at the time, to come forward.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardai are appealing for witnesses following a serious injury road traffic collision in Portumna this morning, Monday 31st January 2022.

"At approximately 6:15am a cyclist was seriously injured when he was struck by a car at Powers Cross, Ballyshrule, Portumna, Co Galway.

"Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward and are also appealing to any road users with video footage from the location between 6:00 – 6:30am to make it available to them.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Loughrea Garda Station on 091 842 870, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station."
