Another Gamescom Opening Night Live is in the books, and with it came mostly updates on known video games, plus a handful of new announcements sprinkled in the mix. Cygames finally announced a (presumably) permanent Granblue Fantasy Relink release date. Bandai and Supermassive are cooking up some Little Nightmares, and it turns out most of the new mechanics in the Cybperpunk 2077 DLC Phantom Liberty are coming to the base game.
There’s another trailer for the next RPG from Genshin Impact maker HoYoverse, a headless Wu Kong bard, and quite a lot more.
Little Nightmares 3 reveal trailer
Little Nightmares 3 kicked the show off with a very big nightmare in the form of a giant doll chasing you and your player two around. This time in the Nowhere, you can play alone or, thanks to online multiplayer, with a friend anywhere around the world.
Little Nightmares 3 is expected to launch sometime in 2024.
Black Myth Wukong gameplay trailer
Game Science wheeled out Black Myth Wukong again for the first time in ages, this time in a trailer complete with some vicious-looking bosses and a headless musician. It continues to look impressive, and we continue to have no release date.
Killing Floor 3 trailer
The first look at Killing Floor 3 debuted during the show. There’s a lot of blood and an army of robots, so basically it’s what you’d expect from Killing Floor.
Age of Empires 4 on Xbox
Relic Entertainment is bringing the award-winning Age of Empires 4 to Xbox consoles for the first time, two years after the strategy game launched on PC. It comes with a suite of quality-of-life updates, including one-button inputs and automation tools to make your job conquering the world a bit more enjoyable.
It’s out now for purchase or on Game Pass.
New Payday 3 trailer
There’s another new Payday 3 trailer ahead of the action game‘s release in September. Not a lot to say about it. It’s Payday, so you know what you’re getting.
Crimson Desert premier trailer
Pearl Abyss, makers of the MMO Black Desert Online, debuted a new trailer for their upcoming Crimson Desert. There are no deserts, it turns out, but there is what looks like a massive medieval open world with magic, robots, horsey acrobatics, dragons, speed racing horses that handle corners with drift, and cats you can pick up and snuggle. It’s quite something.
You can tell it’s a fantasy RPG because the cats don’t murder you in retribution for the cuddles.
New Assassin's Creed Mirage trailer
Ubisoft plunked another Assassin’s Creed Mirage trailer in the middle of the show. There’s not a lot new to see here, but it does feature Basim speaking his own language instead of just English with an accent, which is a refreshing change of pace.
Tekken 8 release date trailer
Tekken 8 swept in with two big announcements. One was the release date, and the other was a new Arcade Mode meant for oldies who remember playing Tekken on arcade machines. I’m just under the age limit there, but close enough that I felt myself crumbling into dust by the time the trailer ended.
Anyway, check out our Tekken 8 coverage for more info.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 campaign trailer
Sledgehammer Games unveiled a new feature in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3: Open Combat Missions. These are basically taking an immersive sim approach to CoD missions, where you can stealth or shoot your way through and use the environment and your skills in creative ways.
We don’t actually see any of that in the 10-minute campaign mission footage, but to be fair, it is just the first mission.
Nightingale early access trailer
It’s been a long time since we last saw Nightingale, the steampunk, crafting, FPS, fantasy RPG. From the new trailer, it seems like it’s bursting with creativity, though we’re still nowhere closer to knowing what’s actually going on here. We don’t have much longer to find out, though. Nightingale enters early access in February 2024.
Granblue Fantasy Relink release date
Granblue Fantasy Relink finally has a release date: Feb. 1, 2024. Collector’s edition pre-orders are live now, and there’s a snazzy new trailer as well.
New Zenless Zone Zero trailer
Genshin Impact maker HoYoverse released a fresh new trailer for Zenless Zone Zero, the studio’s upcoming urban fantasy RPG. The trailer shows a glimpse of the game’s social systems, some new characters, and a handful of locations, and it’s giving strong Persona-but-with-furry-humanoid-friends vibes. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait long to see more.
Lords of the Fallen trailer
We already thought Lords of the Fallen looked brilliant, and the new trailer didn’t change our minds at all.
Sonic Superstars release date
We’ve seen a lot of Sonic Superstars already, but this time, Sega announced a release date as well. Sonic Superstars launches Oct. 17, 2023 – just days before Super Mario Wonder.
Sonic Frontiers DLC trailer
Sega is gearing up for the last round of Sonic Frontiers DLC, and it’s quite the hefty expansion. There’s a new story chapter, an extra playable character, new challenges, and more, and it’s launching on Sep. 28, 2023, for all platforms.
The First Descendent open beta trailer
Nexon premiered a new First Descendant trailer highlighting some of the space game’s action and plot conflicts. You can get a taste for yourself soon, during the First Descendant open beta that starts on Sep. 19, 2023, for PC and console.
Expedition Mudrunners trailer
Expedition Mudrunners was a nice surprise, an expansive-looking, open world car adventure. That’s not a string of descriptors I get to use every day, so I’m keen to see more in the lead-up to Expedition‘s 2024 launch.
The Crew Motorfest free trial trailer
Ubisoft also brought a new Crew Motorfest trailer for the ride, and while there’s not much new to see here, Ubisoft did announce a free trial for console and PC players. It runs from Sep. 14, 2023, through Sep. 17, 2023, and gives you access to five hours of the game at no cost.
Cyberpunk 2077 DLC Phantom Liberty trailer
CD Projekt RED talked about new skills and lots of gameplay changes for the upcoming Phantom Liberty DLC, and we finally get to see some of it in action. As an added bonus, CDPR announced most of the new features will turn up in the base game’s 2.0 update as well, except the new Relic Tree system that augments your cybernetics.
Last Epoch new class trailer
A new class is coming to Last Epoch, the action-RPG born from a Reddit post almost a decade ago: the Runemaster. It’s a complex magic class with dozens of skills only a button press away.
Another Mortal Kombat 1 trailer
NetherRealm published another new Mortal Kombat 1 trailer, this time introducing General Shao and Sindel to the roster of main fighters. It’s pretty brutal even by Mortal Kombat standards, so maybe don’t eat anything while you watch.
Diablo 4 Season 2 teaser
Diablo 4 Season 1 is still going strong, but Blizzard is already teasing Diablo 4 Season 2. It’s a seasonally appropriate update called Season of Blood, launching in October 2023 with vampires, new bosses, and new quests.
New Alan Wake 2 trailer
The show closed with a new look at Alan Wake 2. We met Saga during the Summer Game Fest, and this trailer was all about Alan – or more specifically, the special nightmarish hell world Alan’s been trapped in for 13 years.
