A Game of Thrones movie is reportedly in the works at Warner Bros.
The massively successful HBO fantasy series has already spawned television spin-offs House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
According to Page Six Hollywood, a screenplay for a movie set in Westeros has already been written by Beau Willimon, known for writing several episodes of the Star Wars series Andor and serving as showrunner of the Netflix drama House of Cards.
The plot will reportedly center on Aegon I, who founded the Targaryen dynasty. The character has never previously been depicted on screen, but the Targaryen family featured heavily in the original series and both spin-off series.
Although the film’s production may be dependent on the pending Paramount Skydance takeover of Warner Bros., Paramount’s CEO David Ellison has pledged that the company will release 30 films a year theatrically and has cited Game of Thrones as his favorite HBO show.
Since the original Game of Thrones ended in 2019, various spin-offs to the franchise have been proposed with many failing to see the light of day.
In 2024, Kit Harington shut down talk of leading a sequel series following his character, Jon Snow.
“There are no plans for it at the moment. It’s off the table for the foreseeable,” Harington said while promoting his crime drama Blood for Dust.
A series centered around the popular Snow, who started Game of Thrones as an outcast and brother of the Night's Watch and fought his way to more power in Westeros and the truth of his ancestry, had reportedly been in development for a few years.
“We sort of threw around a few ideas. Nothing really stuck, and we’re going to leave it there for the moment,” Harington said.
In 2021, it was reported that House of the Dragon character Lord Corlys Velaryon could reportedly get his own show, titled either Sea Snake or 9 Voyages. The character, known as the “Sea Snake,” is the most famous nautical adventurer in Westeros.
At the same time, a series about Princess Nymeria, who travelled with the Rhoynar to Dorne and married Lord Mors Martell, was also pitched with the working title 10,000 Ships.
Another show, Flea Bottom, was apparently to be set in the poorest district of King’s Landing.
In 2019, HBO reportedly dropped a prequel set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. Starring Naomi Watts, it had already filmed a pilot episode when it was scrapped.
