Fury at 'student car dumping' on Liverpool streets

Students in Liverpool have been accused of 'dumping' cars and adding to the city's parking woes.

Problem parking is a major issue for many in Liverpool and something the new leader of the council, Liam Robinson, has vowed to tackle as one his early priorities. While parking on pavements all over Liverpool is one problem that is regularly highlighted on social media, another that has been cited is around the sheer volume of cars brought into the city by students.

Videos and images posted on twitter show a large number of cars parked in the North Mossley Hill Road and Greenbank Lane areas of south Liverpool. The area is well known as having a high density of students living in it including the Greenbank Student Village.

The pictures and clips were shared by the @The_Fotoholic twitter account, which is run by a retired professional photographer who chooses to keep their identity secret.

They tweeted: "One huge problem in the city is student car dumping. It's a new thing since lockdown. Students used to come to the city by public transport, now they all buy a car and dump it here only to use it again to get home."

They added: "Greenbank Lane and North Mossley Hill Road and the bottom of Penny Lane and the cycle lanes are just a dumping ground for cars and because the yellow lines and dropped curbs are ignored it caused huge issues here with walking cycling and driving."

Speaking to the ECHO the local resident added: "It never used to be such an issue in these areas, but now the students seem to come and dump the cars here for the whole term.

Another twitter user said: "Really difficult to drive down Greenbank Lane because of this. Noticeably clear outside of University terms."

Problems with parking continue to blight the city and the new Labour administration - led by Cllr Robinson - have said they aim to tackle the issue moving forward.

Cllr Robinson said: "These issues matter to people and the also affect the perception of the city."
