Fundraiser Gary McKee runs 365 marathons in a year to raise money for two local cancer charities

A 53-year-old Englishman who pledged to run a marathon every day of 2022 completed the feat on Saturday, raising more than 1 million British pounds for charity.

The BBC is reporting that, on the last day of the year, Gary McKee, from Cumbria, completed his 365th marathon, having started running a marathon each day from January 1, 2022.

He ran his last 42-kilometre route of the year on December 31, 2022, before starting work at a nearby nuclear site that day.

Locals and wellwishers lined both sides of the finish line as McKee completed his last marathon of the year, with the crowd cheering him on.

McKee told the BBC he was thrilled by the reception he received.

"The streets were lined. It was raining, but everybody was out clapping and shouting. It was fantastic seeing everybody there," he said.

"It's something I'll always remember."

McKee later revealed in a tweet that he had surpassed his fundraising goal for charities Macmillan Cancer Support and Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

By Sunday, McKee's fundraising total was sitting at 1,061,754 British pounds ($1.87 million), with 32,638 people having contributed to his campaign.

McKee's fundraising page says he has been a fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer support for close to 20 years, performing feats such as climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, jumping out of aeroplanes and walking across hot coals.

The page says he ran 100 marathons in 100 days in 2017, has completed seven London Marathons, and ran 110 marathons in 110 days in 2021.
