Full menu for King's Edinburgh Garden Party with some old school classics

What did you have for lunch today? Meal deal? Salad from home? Last night's leftovers? Well, for one lucky bunch, it was an afternoon of delicious delicacies as they were invited to the most regal lunch break in Edinburgh.

Ahead of receiving the Honours of Scotland at St Giles' Cathedral on Wednesday, King Charles and Queen Camilla welcomed honoured guests into the ground of Holyrood Palace for the annual royal garden party on Tuesday.

Given the tradition and mystery that often comes closely associated to the royal family, details of how these kinds of events pan out can often be scarce, but Edinburgh Live managed to secure a peak behind the curtain (or over the hedge) to see what scran is served at such an exclusive event.

As you'd expect, there was plenty of hearty British classics on offer. First thing's first, what's in the sandwiches? There was no shortage of selection for those guests lucky enough to be welcomed into the majestic gardens.

From the simple - with cucumber and mint & egg mayo - to the refined, with gammon and wholegrain mustard to coronation chickpea, gooseberry and coriander chutney. Aye, never had that one myself either.

Of course, given the King's well-documented affection for north of the border, there had to be some Scottish twists in there. Smoked salmon on Oatcake with golden beetroot is enough to get your Braveheart beating.

Now for the most important part of any garden party. After politely eating a sandwich, it's time for the main event: the cakes. There's more Scottish options with Dundee cake and Cranachan macarons, as well as an old-favourite Victoria sponge.

White chocolate calisson, apricot and lavender tart, opera cake slice, sultana scone with strawberry jam and clotted cream, raspberry shortcake and ice creams of vanilla and strawberry flavoured ice cream round off the sweet selection. My mouth's watering at the thought!

Obviously, it wouldn't be a royal garden party without some tea. That's why they literally called it "Royal Garden Party Tea". No messing about.

Also offered on the beverage front was elderflower presse, with the royals also going all trendy with the addition of iced coffee to the menu. Perhaps they were prepared for sunshine instead of thunderstorms in the capital on Tuesday.

After their fine feast, the King and Queen will continue preparations for the Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication tomorrow, which will see thousands line the streets on Edinburgh's Royal Mile.
