Fulham v Liverpool live: Late drama as Harrison Reed’s stunning goal denies Reds a win in Premier League

Harrison Reed celebrates - (Getty Images)

Harrison Reed’s astonishing 97th-minute strike denied Liverpool a victory moments after Cody Gakpo thought he won the game in stoppage time as Fulham earned a 2-2 draw in the Premier League.

Gakpo sparked wild scenes in the away end as he bundled in Jeremie Frimpong’s cross in the 94th minute. But Reed, who had just come off the bench, then crashed an unstoppable, swerving shot in the top corner.

The late drama came after Florian Wirtz cancelled out Harry Wilson’s first-half finish, with both goals awarded by VAR after offside checks. Wirtz’s second Liverpool goal required a lengthy VAR check before it was awarded.

The Premier League champions were dealt a blow before kick-off as Hugo Ekitike was ruled out due to a hamstring injury and left Arne Slot without a striker.

Liverpool remain unbeaten in eight games but three points would have been priceless ahead of Thursday’s trip to leaders Arsenal.

The warning Liverpool ignored to underline Arne Slot’s alarming issue

19:02 , Miguel Delaney

It was a game of fine margins… and rather wide margins. Not least the space allowed to Harrison Reed to score one of the goals of the season. That 97th-minute strike denied Liverpool what would have been a rare come-from-behind win. Fulham could reasonably claim this 2-2 draw was the least they deserved, though, as the margin between the actual teams wasn’t that wide.

This is where there are greater questions for Arne Slot.

Marco Silva’s team were often superior, and Liverpool only got back into the game through the tightest offside call possible. Literal millimetres, given the definition.

Here’s Miguel Delaney’s take from Craven Cottage and a concerning trend for the Reds:

The warning Liverpool ignored to underline Arne Slot’s alarming issue

'The only one to blame is ourselves'

18:19 , Jamie Braidwood

A disappointed Arne Slot, speaking to Sky Sports after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Fulham.

“Every time it's just not enough. We relied on the whole season on good and bad luck and that is something we have to improve. We have to improve so a shot in the last minute does not immediately lead to us losing points. That is what we are trying to do but we have not done that yet.

“I liked our second half more than our first half. We controlled the game and a few times were close. That's what we brought in the second half. Two disallowed goals, hitting the bar, a goal, that is ideally what you want to see when you have so many attacking players out.

“Once in a while the boys should get a reward but we do not get it and once again the only one to blame is ourselves.”

Harrison Reed on his wondergoal for Fulham - and first since April 2023

18:09 , Jamie Braidwood

Fulham’s hero Harrison Reed, speaking to Sky Sports:

“I knew we were going to get another chance, I thought it would be a bit more clear cut than that, but it came to me nicely.

“Kev has given me the ball and I had no other option but to hit one. What a feeling. Not sure on the celebration, I was a bit everywhere, but a deserved point definitely.”

What next for Fulham?

17:57 , Jamie Braidwood

It’s five games unbeaten in the Premier League for Fulham. They host west London rivals Chelsea on Wednesday.

Harry Wilson continued his excellent form with another goal today while Fulham will be bouncing into that derby after Reed’s goal here.

'You cannot save that ball'

17:47 , Jamie Braidwood

Florian Wirtz, speaking to Sky Sports after Harrison Reed’s stunning goal to deny Liverpool victory.

"The strike, there is nothing to say. It was unbelievable. You cannot save that ball. Normally, it doesn't go in like this.

“The actions before could have been better, I'm not sure. It was from a throw-in, so we have to be better.

"Again, we are in a difficult situation because we drew two times. It's not what we want, we want more. We have to get better but it's still a process.”

Where does this leave Liverpool?

17:37 , Jamie Braidwood

Liverpool probably didn’t deserve to win today. But it felt as if Cody Gakpo’s late winner was a priceless gift for Arne Slot’s side ahead of travelling to Arsenal on Thursday.

Instead, they miss the opportunity to solidify their place in the top four ahead of that crunch trip to the Emirates. Slot was shaking his head after Harrison Reed’s wondergoal.

Liverpool remain unbeaten in nine games, eight of those in the Premier League. But Arsenal, Manchester City and Aston Villa are pulling away.

FULL TIME! Fulham 2-2 Liverpool

LATE DRAMA! Liverpool thought they had won it. Harrison Reed said, nope. His woldie of a strike, swerving into the top corner, denies Liverpool a win and earns Fulham a point.

GOAL!!!! Fulham 2-2 Liverpool (REED 90+7')

17:11 , Jamie Braidwood

WHAT HAS HARRISON REID JUST DONE!!!!!!

An astonishing goal from the Fulham substitute, finding the top corner to rescue a point!

It’s his first goal in two years. And it’s probably the best goal the Premier League will see this season.

GOAL!!!! Fulham 1-2 Liverpool (GAKPO 90+4')

17:08 , Jamie Braidwood

HAS CODY GAKPO WON IT FOR LIVERPOOL?!

Incredible! Both teams looked happy with a point! But Frimpong found an excellent cross, Anderson missed his clearance, and Gakpo bundles it into the net to spark wild scenes in the away end.

Fulham 1-1 Liverpool

16:45 , Jamie Braidwood

70 mins: An issue for Liverpool is the options they have off the bench, or the lack of them.

Jeremie Frimpong and Rio Ngumoha could be the attacking changes - with Ekitike, Isak and Salah all out.

Wilson picks up a yellow card for tripping Bradley.

GOAL! Fulham 1-1 Liverpool (WIRTZ 57')

16:33 , Jamie Braidwood

IT’S GIVEN! WIRTZ HAS HIS SECOND FOR LIVERPOOL AND THEY ARE BACK IN THIS!

Wirtz was played onside by Issa Diop and took it well, scooping the finish past Leno.

A big moment, potentially. Liverpool have certainly started this half much better.

VAR! Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

16:33 , Jamie Braidwood

59 mins: They are still checking. This must be tight.

VAR! Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

16:31 , Jamie Braidwood

57 mins: Liverpool are knocking on the door! Bradley bursts forward with a powerful run and flicks it forward to Wirtz, who finishes first time.

16:30 , Jamie Braidwood

57 mins: Szoboszlai plays a lovely switch to Wirtz but the German is crowded out in the box as he tried to cut inside.

16:27 , Jamie Braidwood

53 mins: OFF THE BAR! Mac Allister is the smallest in the box but finds himself on the end of Szoboszlai’s corner and cracks the woodwork with his header! Fulham clear.

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

16:26 , Jamie Braidwood

52 mins: Liverpool need a moment of magic from someone... but Szoboszlai can’t repeat his stunning free-kick against Arsenal earlier this season as he shoots wide from the set-piece.

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

16:23 , Jamie Braidwood

49 mins: Liverpool have also lost eight of the nine Premier League games they’ve been behind at half-time.

16:21 , Jamie Braidwood

47 mins: Liverpool have the ball in the net but Gakpo is about five yards offside from Kerkez’s powerful low cross.

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

16:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Back underway! Jamie Carragher has also called Liverpool’s football in the first half as “boring” - adding there’s been “no real threat” and too many who have played “five-a-side” football.

HALF TIME! Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

16:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Jamie Carragher is not happy in the Sky Sports studio, accusing Virgil van Dijk of “lazy defending” in Fulham’s opener against Liverpool.

"I'm sick of seeing it all the time. It's not just Liverpool, it's right through the centre-back [ in the Premier League], letting midfield players do their running for them.

"Harry Wilson does not make that run if Konate is across and Van Dijk is across.”

HALF TIME! Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

16:11 , Jamie Braidwood

And this was why Harry Wilson had to wait. He was played onside by Virgil van Dijk.

HALF TIME! Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

He had to wait to celebrate it, but Fulham fans enjoyed this crisp strike from Harry Wilson.

HALF TIME! Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

16:02 , Jamie Braidwood

45+1 mins: That’s a good ball from Konate down the channel to Gakpo. But Gakpo then misses Szoboszlai with his cut-back.

Then Wirtz overhits his cross, straight out of play.

That will take us to half time and it’s been wretched from Liverpool.

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

16:00 , Jamie Braidwood

45 mins: Fulham have not had a shot since taking the lead - Liverpool have managed just one since they fell behind.

There are two minutes added on.

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

15:57 , Jamie Braidwood

42 mins: Another Liverpool corner is dealt with by Fulham, this time Jimenez heading away the delivery aimed for Van Dijk.

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

15:52 , Jamie Braidwood

36 mins: Fulham are still looking very happy sitting back and letting Liverpool come at them, seemingly secure enough that Liverpool will struggle to break them down.

Well it’s working so far. Van Dijk overhits his pass looking for Jones.

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

15:48 , Jamie Braidwood

32 mins: OFF THE POST! Gakpo is offside, but Szoboszlai picks out a lovely cross to find the forward, who heads onto the post.

Wouldn’t have counted.

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

15:47 , Jamie Braidwood

31 mins: CLOSE! That’s better from Liverpool. Gravenberch wins the ball and sparks the counter. Wirtz flashes a ball across and Jones flicked towards goal, but he was denied yby an excellent sliding block from Lukic.

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

15:40 , Jamie Braidwood

24 mins: You couldn’t have had a clearer contrast between the confidence that Wilson showed in finishing that and the manner Gakpo fluffed his earlier chance. Liverpool have yet to respond and look very short of ideas.

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

15:38 , Jamie Braidwood

22 mins: That’s five goal involvements in his last eight Premier League home games for Harry Wilson, and another banger.

GOAL! Fulham 1-0 Liverpool (WILSON 17')

15:34 , Jamie Braidwood

ONSIDE! HARRY WILSON SCORES AGAINST LIVERPOOL!

You just knew he would! Wilson continues his stunning form with another lovely goal!

From the Jimenez flick-on, Wilson was played onside by Van Dijk and Kerkez and buried a low strike into the far corner. It’s six Premier League goals for the season now.

“Harry Wilson, he left cause you’re s---” cry the Fulham fans.

NO GOAL! Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

15:32 , Jamie Braidwood

17 mins: Oh that’s more like it! Harry Wilson races through and smashes a shot past Alisson - but the flag goes up!

This looks close, though...

Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

15:30 , Jamie Braidwood

15 mins: Dear me this is flat. Liverpool played their first goalless draw in two years against Leeds - if this continues we could be in store for another. Fulham are offering very little.

Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

15:27 , Jamie Braidwood

11 mins: BIG CHANCE! Jones plays a lovely ball through the lines to Gakpo - who looks just about onside - but the Dutchman looks very uncomfortable on his left foot and bobbles the finish off target. He is not saved by the offside flag.

Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

15:24 , Jamie Braidwood

9 mins: Fulham are sitting off Liverpool and letting Van Dijk and Kerkez exchange passes. Liverpool are looking extremely narrow, and have to force everything through the middle.

Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

15:22 , Jamie Braidwood

6 mins: Van Dijk is the target from the Gakpo corner and the second cross from Szoboszlai but Fulham manager to clear their box. Wirtz also had a shot but Fulham blocked.

Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

15:21 , Jamie Braidwood

5 mins: Some patient build-up on the edge of the box from Liverpool. Gakpo is allowed to swivel and shoot and his shot deflects off Andersen and behind for a corner.

Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

15:19 , Jamie Braidwood

4 mins: Little to report other than some tactical observations. Fulham are indeed playing 3-4-3, with Robinson and Castagne the wing-backs and Wilson and Smith Rowe behind Jiminez.

Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

15:17 , Jamie Braidwood

1 min: I think it might be 4-42 for Liverpool, or some version of it. Wirtz and Gakpo are high and central, Jones on the left and Szoboszlai right, Gravenberch and Mac Allister in central midfield.

KICK-OFF! Fulham 0-0 Liverpool

A back-five for Fulham?

14:45 , Jamie Braidwood

With Timothy Castagne and Antonee Robinson coming in today, there’s a possibility Fulham play parts of this game in a back-five.

Who will play up front for Liverpool?

14:35 , Jamie Braidwood

There is a possibility Florian Wirtz plays as a false 9 for Liverpool at Craven Cottage, with Cody Gakpo on the left and Dominik Szoboszlai on the right. That’s my guess.

For what it’s worth, Fulham boss Marco Silva thinks that too.

Arne Slot issues Hugo Ekitike injury update as Liverpool striker misses Fulham trip

14:25 , Jamie Braidwood

Hugo Ekitike missed Liverpool’s trip to Fulham due to a minor hamstring injury but could return in time for the clash with Premier League leaders Arsenal on Thursday.

"[Alexander] Isak has been out for a few weeks now and that's meant Ekitike had to play more minutes than the previous part of the season,” Arne Slot told Sky Sports before the Fulham clash.

"That's led to him picking up a slight hamstring injury, and for a player of his age, not completely used to the Premier League, that's been a bit too much. That's why he will be out for today - and hopefully back for the Arsenal game [on Thursday].”

Could Harry Wilson return to haunt Liverpool?

14:14 , Jamie Braidwood

Harry Wilson only made two senior appearances for Liverpool and never appeared for them in the Premier League, but the Wales international is enjoying his best run in the top-flight and is bang in form for Fulham.

He’s ben involved in four goals in his last seven home league appearances, scoring one with one assist.

How big a loss is Hugo Ekitike for Liverpool?

14:02 , Jamie Braidwood

The Frenchman has been the only one of Liverpool’s new signings who can be considered a success this season, with 11 goals and two assists this season.

He’s Liverpool’s top scorer, and by some distance. Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah are second with five each.

And with Ekitike and Alexander Isak out today, and Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Liverpool will need an impact from Florian Wirtz, who has just one goal for the Reds.

Big news from Craven Cottage. Hugo Ekitike is not in the Liverpool squad at Craven Cottage due to what the club says is a “minor fitness issue”.

Arne Slot reflects on Liverpool's start to the season

13:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Arne Slot accepted that Liverpool are struggling to create chances from open play and said fourth place is a fair reflection of where they are at this season.

"From open play, from where we are, when I look at Arsenal, I look at City and I look at us, it's fair that we are not above them.

"That we are so many points behind them, there are reasons for that but it wouldn't be fair if we were above them for the way we have played.

"I think it is clear and obvious that we hardly concede chances any more. But for me it is also clear and obvious that we find it quite hard to generate enough chances for all the ball possession we have and that is not new for us this season."

Fulham delay Liverpool's title coronation

13:05 , Jamie Braidwood

Fulham won this exact fixture 3-2 last season to delay Liverpool’s title coronation, taking advantage of some poor defending that, in hindsight, was actually a forewarning of Liverpool’s slump as champions this campaign.

The last time Fulham won back-to-back home games against Liverpool was in May 2007.

Arne Slot sums up 'constant battle' of Liverpool's season

12:50 , Jamie Braidwood

Arne Slot ruled that Liverpool are not worrying about catching Arsenal and Manchester City and said the Reds face a “constant battle” with their performances this season.

"Realistically those two teams are quite far away from us and we should not look at those two at this moment in time," Slot said after Liverpool reached the halfway mark of the campaign.

"We have had our struggles throughout. Now we have been seven (league) games in a row unbeaten but if you say this you feel like, 'they are flying through the league', but that is not what we are doing.

"Every single game we play it's hard work. We are mainly the team that is probably better than the other team but not enough.

"I will keep pushing and the players will keep pushing to get to a situation where we can make the difference bigger and hopefully we can find a moment where we can fly through the season.

"But for the first 19 games it has been a constant battle, close to each other, sometimes a bit lucky, sometimes a bit unlucky."

The Arne Slot trade-off that will make or break Liverpool’s season

12:35 , Jamie Braidwood

The Reds have endured a season of thirds, explains Richard Jolly, with fluid attacking play and defensive solidarity rarely co-existing and posing Arne Slot a unique problem.

What is the Liverpool team news?

12:32 , Jamie Braidwood

Mohamed Salah remains at the Africa Cup of Nations but there are no major updates from Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Leeds, unless Joe Gomez returns to the squad.

What is the Fulham team news?

12:31 , Jamie Braidwood

Josh King and Kenny Tete are doubts for Fulham, who are without Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze due to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Good afternoon

12:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Hello and welcome to today’s live coverage of Fulham v Liverpool in the Premier League.

Fulham left it late to claim a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day to keep their decent run going, while Liverpool looked like they could have played all night and not found a way past Leeds at Anfield in their 0-0 stalemate.

Here’s hoping for a better show at Craven Cottage this afternoon.
