From ruin to restoration: Byzantine Greek Monastery becomes 'Art Reliquary' for spiritual works

On the island of Andros, visitors can explore five monasteries, including the oldest monastery in the Aegean Sea: the Holy Monastery of Panachrantos and Saint Panteleimon.

Perched at an altitude of 600 meters on the northern slopes of Mount Gerakones, the monastery stands proudly like a fortress, having overlooked the island since 961 AD. It was founded by Nikephoros Phokas upon his return from the Byzantine campaign against the Arabs in Crete.

In recent years, however, the historic monastery has also become a sanctuary for contemporary Greek art. Its imposing, restored tower now houses “The Art Treasury – A Gallery Dedicated to Spirituality and Contemporary Creation.”

The monastery houses the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, believed to have been painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist, as well as the holy skull relic of Saint Panteleimon. Its abbot, Elder Evdokimos, is 93 years old and has lived there for the past 70 years.

“When I first arrived, the monastery was in ruins. There were no rooms, no dining hall, and no kitchen. Thanks be to God, with the help of many people and a generous shipowner, we managed to restore it. Today, it is beautiful and well cared for,” Abbot Evdokimos told Euronews.

The monastery quickly became a destination for thousands of pilgrims and a spiritual landmark for the people of Andros. Islanders would turn to it in times of hardship, seeking comfort, healing, and hope.

“In the past, the monastery was like a hospital, and people loved it dearly. It was an institution serving the wider community, not merely a place for monks. People came to receive the grace of Saint Panteleimon, to find peace of mind, and to heal their wounds,” said Abbot Evdokimos.

The concept, curatorial direction, and selection of works have been entrusted to painter Christos Kehayioglou.

“It may seem like something unconventional or even daring,” Father Philaretos told Euronews. “In reality, the Church has always been willing to embrace the language of each era in order to communicate the Gospel’s message of love. Art and religion have always been closely connected. Throughout history, faith traditions have used the artistic expressions of their time.”

“Our goal is to foster a dialogue between the Church, spirituality, and contemporary creators,” explained Father Philaretos. “We also hope this initiative will strengthen the monastery’s relationship with its visitors. Those who come here have the opportunity not only to experience the artworks but also to engage in meaningful conversations with the monks.”

The collection features around 60 works by Greek artists, representing a wide range of styles and artistic approaches. Among them are pieces by Eos Angeli, Yannis Moralis, Christos Bokoros, Alekos Fassianos, and many others.
