Omar bin Laden grew up in the shadow of his father, al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, but later built a different public identity through painting, horses and landscapes. His artistic journey, which began decades after leaving his father's world, brought together memories of childhood with images of Afghanistan, the American West and freedom.
Born in Saudi Arabia in 1981, Omar spent parts of his childhood there, in Sudan and in Afghanistan. He said he left his father's mission at 18 and recalled seeing Osama for the last time at his Afghan compound in 2001, before the 11 September attacks.
