From heart attacks to medical research: the gender pain gap in numbers

Endometriosis affects one in 10 women of reproductive age, yet it takes on average eight years to diagnose.3

Only 2.5% of publicly funded research in the UK is dedicated to women’s reproductive health,4 even though just under one in three women will experience severe reproductive health issues in their lifetime.5

There has been more than five times the amount of research into erectile dysfunction than there has been into premenstrual syndrome. This is despite 90% of women reporting some symptoms of premenstrual symptoms, whereas less than one in five men (19%) experience erectile dysfunction over the course of their lifetime.6

Women are more likely than men to be afflicted by chronic pain.7

Nearly half (48%) of all adults believe there is a “gap” in the identification and treatment of pain between genders.8

It was only made mandatory last year for new doctors to have compulsory women’s health training, but this won’t come into effect until 2024.9

On average, women are 50% more likely than men to be misdiagnosed when they have a heart attack. Chest pains, pancreatitis, or the wrong type of heart attack are common misdiagnoses.10

24% of women report that pain had led them to feeling depressed, compared with 18% of men.11

Just under two-thirds (63%) of women v only 39% of men believe the gender pain gap exists, and women are not taken as seriously, because they are viewed as “emotional”.12
