Fresno Police Chief Resigns Amid Allegations Of Inappropriate Relationship

police

The chief of police for the city of Fresno has officially resigned from his position following an investigation into allegations of an affair with an officer's wife. Paco Balderrama, who served as the city's top cop for three and a half years, informed city leadership in February about an impending allegation related to an 'inappropriate off-duty relationship.' He was placed on administrative leave on June 13 as the city launched an investigation into the alleged affair.

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer expressed that it has been a challenging time for the community, the police department, and the families involved. With Balderrama's resignation, the hope is to move forward and focus on public safety. Fresno City Manager Georgeanne White clarified that allegations of Balderrama undermining the officer's career were not substantiated.

In his statement, Balderrama acknowledged the privilege of serving as Fresno's police chief and expressed gratitude to the community and the police department. He mentioned stepping away to focus on his faith and family. Reports indicate that Balderrama had applied for the chief of police position in Austin, Texas, prior to the news of the alleged affair.

Balderrama, the first Latino appointed as Fresno's police chief, will officially step down on July 25. The city will commence a national search for his replacement.
