Frenkie de Jong sent Manchester United fans wild at the weekend as he was spotted liking a post from the club on Instagram.
United’s pursuit of the midfielder has been going on for much of the summer, with Erik ten Hag having identified him as an ideal target as he begins his rebuild. Supporters have had to remain patient, with the club having been in discussion with Barcelona for more than 50 days now.
United did appear to be edging closer to a deal last week. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, a fee was agreed with the Catalan giants, with United set to pay €65m (£56.14m) plus add-ons, though Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently claimed the La Liga side have 'no intention' of selling.

Yet United remain hopeful that they might be able to get a deal over the line as De Jong returns from his summer break. The 25-year-old has already got fans excited on social media.
Some eagle-eyed supporters spotted De Jong 'liking' a post from United celebrating the birthday of former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. A lot of fans took this as being a hint that his move to Old Trafford is getting closer.
Others though weren’t getting too excited. Some supporters didn’t see too much in De Jong’s activity, pointing towards the post also being linked to the Netherlands national team’s account.
Either way, United remain in discussions with Laporta and Barcelona as they look to get a deal for De Jong over the line.
"I'm going to do everything I can in my power so that Frenkie stays here, but there’s also a salary issue and that would have to be adjusted,” Laporta said.
