French pedestrian killed by drunk driver in Phuket

A French pedestrian has died after being struck by a car driven by a drunk driver fleeing after crashing into six parked vehicles in Phuket, around noon on Saturday.

Police were called to Talat Nuea at 12.07pm.

Thy found a grey Volvo, partly mounted on the kerb, with heavy damage to its left front. The driver, who had minor injuries, was identified only as Jatuphon, 51. Nearby was a French pedestrian, identified as Loic, who was seriously injured. Both were taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital.

The driver’s blood test reading was 265 milligrammes of alcohol per 100ml of blood, police said. The legal limit to drive is 50 milligrammes.

Police said Mr Jatuphon first crashed into a row of six cars and motorcycles parked in an alley. He sped away before hitting the French tourist, who was walking on a footpath, and two more parked vehicles.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at a hospital later on Saturday. 

The driver faces charges of drunk driving causing death and damage to property.
