French abstract painter Pierre Soulages, who has died at the age of 102, went "beyond black" in a career that spanned eight decades, exploring every possible interplay of light and texture on his unique black canvases. Soulages was celebrated at the Louvre in Paris, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and with his own museum in his hometown of Rodez in southern France.
